2023 Nominations for Technical Committees

Scale Technical Committee Nominations

Graham Kennedy

Aeromodelling in all its forms has been my prime hobby for over 40 years.  However, my main interest has been in Scale.

In addition to practical aeromodelling I have developed a world wide contact base and have assisted at National and International level in Scale RC organisation.  My experiences have included Scale judging in 4 continents and being the only individual in the world to have judged at the F4 World Champs, the Jet World Masters and Top Gun.

I have held numerous positions in the SAA, BMFA and FAI including membership of the Scale Technical Committee, Scale Contest Director, BMFA Scale Team Manager and FAI Scale Subcommittee Chair. I am currently the Coach for the UK BMFA Scale Team and Treasurer for the BMFA Scale Technical Committee.  I created, developed and currently manage the successful Scale Sessions on Zoom. I am a Scale advisor to the FAI and I advise aeromodellers in the emerging scale nations of Greece and Brazil. I have also been instrumental in advising the USA on their return to international competition.

As in the past 4 years, my aim is to use my extensive experience, contact base and management skills to to develop the UK Scale scene yet further.  As Project Lead for our 2026 FAI F4 World Championships Bid, I am well placed to achieve this.

Outside of aeromodelling I am a keen trail and adventure runner and have completed 6 road marathons.

My aviation modelling career began, I assume like most of my generation, with Airfix plastic kits that I was too young to build properly and transitioned to Keilkraft Flying Scale which were even less suitable, required the theft of my father’s razor blades and insured a lack of success! That which kept myself and those like me persevering through such an extended run of failures could only be termed addiction! Limited success of course began as experience was gained and by my early teens I was capable of building models that flew, but would never have won concours! After suffering the usual distractions of girls and motorcycles I returned to modelling when I learnt to fly radio and became involved in the thriving nineteen seventies R/C Thermal Soaring competition scene.

Following a break. I returned to modelling in the mid-nineties with a focus on R/C power, especially scale. A few years later I entered my first R/C Scale competition and have remained involved with that discipline ever since, winning both F4H (Clubman) and F4C British Nationals as well as representing Great Britain in the F4C World Championships.  I was co-opted on to the Scale Technical Committee in 2018 as a non-voting advisor specifically tasked to organise outdoor R/C scale competitions and have undertaken that role since. Scale, like all other branches of our hobby, is suffering falling numbers and one of my aspirations as full STC member would be to do more to arouse the interest of the club flyer

Michael Smith

I have always had an interest in aeroplanes as far back as I can remember. I grew up living on the flight path to RAF Manston (Battle of Britain) airfield in East Kent and was privileged to see all sorts of flights in and out, particularly the Avro Vulcan.

After leaving Catering College in the 70s I went to London to seek work as a Chef. Big culture shock for a country boy.

To find some solace I purchased Aeromodellers at the local model shop and very quickly became a disciple of Eric Coates with his Free Flight Scale Column.

From around the age of 25 I have competed in Free Flight Scale contests with all sorts of results. Going from the low of not qualifying to having the fortune of winning the Nationals on several occasions in both Scale Free Flight I/C power and Co2 / Electric outdoor classes.

I was the Contest Director at the Nationals for Scale Free Flight for a several years during the 80s, pre-computer, old style pencil and paper.

I am currently elected to the Scale Technical in the role of Rules Officer and Scale Free Flight Representative.

I have put my name forward to be a member of the Scale Technical Committee in order to progress this class of model and will endeavour to increase participation in flying scale models for enjoyment as well as competition.

Silent Flight Technical Committee Nominations

Jon Edison

An enthusiastic modeller from an early age, I have constructed and flown many types of model aircraft, and in particular, all aspects of Slope Soaring. After catching the racing bug in the 90's I have been involved with F3F Slope Racing ever since.

Competing at National level, I have helped to promote F3F and seen it develop into the success that it is today. I am involved in the organisation and running of National and International slope racing events, and offer help and support for the coordination of F3F in the UK.

I am currently Chairman of the Silent Flight Technical Committee ( SFTC ), Membership Secretary and Treasurer for the North York Moors Ridge Soaring Club, and a founder member and Chairman of the Great Britain Slope Racing Association

I believe I have brought an objective and constructive approach to the Silent Flight Technical Committee through skills developed over many years of working for large multi-national companies. The SFTC currently has a great team, and I would like to continue on the committee in order to carry on the work of serving the flyers it represents. Now retired, I enjoy being involved with a great sport, and contributing to its continued development.

I’ve been an enthusiastic – though inexpert – flat-field gliding competitor for over ten years, including frequent national and some international forays as well as regular participation in local competitions in Kent. An occasional slope flyer and an electric and IC sport flier at my local club.

I’ve been an SFTC member for four years, acting previously as PRO  (built and maintain the SFTC web site at https://silent-flight-tech.bmfa.uk/ and for the last two years as Secretary). I was BARCS Secretary for four years and am still a BARCS Committee member. I’m Kent Interclub club rep for Canterbury Pilgrims and Kent Interclub Vice-Chair. I was Secretary of North Downs MFC for several years (and built and maintain our web site at https://thenorthdownsmodelflyingclub.wordpress.com/).  I’ve a lot of experience as an F5J contest organiser and CD, at national as well as local events.

Outside of modelling, I’ve many years of experience as a legal academic and in University admin roles and a long involvement as a trustee (and sometime Chair) of Canterbury Housing Advice Centre. This has given me high-level skills in drafting and interpreting rules, wide and varied administrative and governance experience, and IT skills. And the temperament, sense of proportion and experience to work amicably, constructively and persuasively with a wide range of people.  I’ve tried to put these to good use on the SFTC to keep competition gliding an efficient and friendly enterprise which encourages people to get involved in both established and emerging classes.

Alex Maxfield

I have been aeromodelling since I was a child, together with my 2 brothers. In the early days I flew Free-flight, control-line and electric round-the-pole before discovering Radio Control. My main focus for many years has been thermal soaring and loved to design and build back in the 1980s with some reasonable national competition success. These days I fly F5J (electro-thermal soaring) and F5RES (2m thermal soarers).

Indoor Technical Committee Nominations

Dave Whitehouse

My interest in aviation goes back to when I was about 10, when living under the flight path of Luton Airport. I built many Airfix kits and Keil Kraft models through my teens. The only one that ever flew for me was a KK Senator.  Then in about 2004 I joined a local RC club and bought a trainer but found I didn’t really gel with RC.  In about 2006 I found indoor flying and have flown indoor free flight models ever since. I’ve dabbled with indoor RC and indoor scale, in the Kit Scale class.

My attentions were turned to indoor duration, building and competitively flying Penny Planes, F1m’s and finally F1d’s.

I originally joined the ITC in about 2012 as a co-opted member, and I have served on the committee ever since, mainly in the capacity of NW representative.

I stepped in last October, when it looked as though the ITC would collapse and offered to be Chairman, to keep this important committee running, which we have managed to achieve.

Until last October my main role as NW committee member was organising combined indoor free flight and lightweight RC meetings and an indoor free flight Gala competition all at the Manchester Velodrome.

I’m also on the team that run the Norwind indoor flying group based in Rochdale.

I’m looking to be elected to the Indoor Technical Committee, so that we can keep indoor flying and duration flying in particular, active in the UK.

Meredith Evans

I am a 54-year-old aerodynamicist working for Airbus at their site near Bristol. My father introduced me to free-flight sport and scale at an early age and this remained my aeromodelling focus until my mid-twenties. This was followed by a period where my main focus was R/C slope/thermal soaring, which resulted in a couple of successful own designs.

During 2009, the search for better weather drove me indoors to fly free-flight scale along with some inherited indoor performance models. As time went by, I was increasingly fascinated by the challenge of the free-flight performance models on show at these meetings. During 2013, I attended my first Indoor Duration Nationals with a No-Cal scale model.

I have attended every Indoor Duration Nationals since and have amassed a number of class victories over the years. I was also instrumental in bringing indoor free flight to the Brabazon Hangers at Filton for a couple of years. In 2016, I joined the Indoor Technical Committee as a co-opted member with the role of representing the interests of the minor competition classes. In 2018, I became an elected member of the committee and took on the role of rules secretary. In 2021, I also took on the role of Public Relations Officer. I hope to continue to serve the Indoor Tech Committee to encourage more people to take up this fascinating discipline.

Anthony Hebb

I am 76 years old and started aeromodelling when I was 7 – I was given a flyable KK Playboy by my cousin and of course that meant repairs and subsequently a lifetime of building model aeroplanes!

Back in the 60’s I was inspired to build some indoor duration models by the likes of Max Hacklinger’s seemingly impossible 44 minute plus flight times in Cardington airship hangar – I think I managed a full minute in the school hall! As soon as funds allowed though I moved on to RC aerobatic slope soarers, ¼ scale vintage gliders and most recently Discuss Launched Gliders.

In 2009, as retirement approached, I returned to the Indoor Duration scene and for the past 9 years I’ve been a member of the Indoor Technical Committee first as PRO and recently Nationals Organiser. During this time we’ve set up the indoorduration-gbr.co.uk website which provides news, contacts and a base reference for information concerning building and flying indoor duration models. The website has recently been moved under the BMFA wing and I’m currently enjoying updating it.

I’ve flown as a team member in the last 8 European and World F1D Championships winning 2 silver and 2 bronze team medals together with a bronze individual medal in 2017 – what an amazing experience for one’s retirement years!

Indoor duration is a small community and we are always seeking to expand it – we have some excellent potential candidates for F1D team places.

AEROMODELLING EXPERIENCE

I have been an aeromodeller since the age of 8. I have flown control line and some radio control soaring plus a bit of indoor. However, my main love has been competition free flight mainly flying international class glider and rubber models. I have had some successes on both the home and international front. I have represented the UK at Championships in both F1A and F1B on many occasions.  I have also managed the UK International team at 10 Championships. I hope to carry on flying at the top level for a few more years!

Chairman of the FFTC for the past 20 plus years

Secretary/treasurer of the East Anglian Area

Secretary/treasurer of the Vikings Free Flight Group

I was awarded a SMAE fellowship 18 years ago and in 2006 I received the distinguished service award from The National Free Flight Society of America

Val James

I have been a member of the CLTC for four years and held the post of Treasurer throughout this time.

My involvement with model flying began over 45 years ago, running F2 combat competitions including the National Championships for many of those years. At the Control Line Power Nationals at Barkston Heath, I assisted with the collation of results and prize-giving and latterly organised this myself.

From 2007 I have been heavily involved with the British F2 team at European and World Championships, supporting them to many individual and team gold medals, as Assistant Team Manager for eleven years and then as Team Manager from 2018. I have recently had the privilege of managing Team GBR at the European Championships in Poland where we gained a Silver Team medal in the F2A Speed class.

My involvement with the British Team has given me a wide understanding of the rules and skills needed for successful control line flying and has helped me make valuable contributions to the CLTC.

My former profession in Education Management has provided me with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and has given me the ability to manage people effectively.

I would welcome the opportunity to continue with my role on the CLTC if re-elected for a further two years.
